…Anti-alcohol campaigners have been known to target anyone who likes an occasional drink as a potential abuser, which is as untrue as it is unfair.
…What causes most people to lose control is the devil at the lower end of the market called lao khao, or white spirit. In terms of volume, lao khao accounts for some 66% of all alcoholic beverages consumed; in terms of actual alcohol content, it accounts for more than 75%. It is by far the most profitable alcoholic drink to make and sell, enjoys liberal tax privileges, and is at least 80 proof, cheap and deadly.
