Disaster & Humanitarian Mapping and data

For about 5 yrs now I have been using the excellent OCHA (UN Office Co-ord. Humanitarian Affairs) website called reliefweb . Recently it had an overhaul. It is an excellent source of maps and data on humanitarian emergencies.

Want to get the latest on the Tsunami relief effort? See the latest info or view a diverse and comprehensive range of maps on the site. The whole site is volumous and easy to use. You can search by country, Thailand , or by the latest emergencies.

Want to know about himilayan Indian avalanches, plagues of locusts in africa and the Middle East or the most severe winter in Afghanistan in 10 years.

And once the media spotlight has left this is probably the best site for informing yourself on the latest relief info and rehabilition/development phase. Links to policy and critiques and many links to NGO, govt. and UN agency sites.

A useful resource to get some insight into the real info behind the ubiqitous & fleeting disaster pictures and headlines.

There is an interesting new report dated 17 Aug 06 on the reliefweb site by the new ADPC (Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre which estimates the total economic effect (damage and loss) of the 2004 Tsunami on the Thai economy to be over 85 billion baht, Most of this is related to damage and loss in the tourist sector.

A summary of the report is available at http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/RWB.NSF/...nt&rc=3&cc=tha or the full download is athttp://www.reliefweb.int/library/doc...-tha-17aug.pdf

Maps, updates and info from NGOs and UN agencies. Hopefully the junta will allow the international community to respond without delay or hinderance.
