Chinese newspapers in Thailand at the twightlight
The reason why fewer and fewer peopel read Chiense newsapper in Thailand is due to the fact that
1. Almost all Chiense newspaper in Thailand used the traditional writing style befor the reformation by Mainland China even though the old traditional style still in used in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
2. Those who study CHinese nowaday learn how to read and write in the New Style so they cannot read the old style characters in the Chinese newspapers in Thailand.
The good years for Chinese Newspaper in Thailand
1. 1926 - 1938 (the year after the passing of Sun Yat Sen to the year of Suppression of Chiense Identity) due to the politicval ideologiocal debates
2. 1946 - 1987 (the year when Thailand recognize Chinese governemtn of Chiang Khai Chek) ... The government allowed Chinese newspaper as a medium to broadcast government policies to Chinese communities after Mainland China has become communist since 1949 while Chiense in Thailand using the newspaper to set up the network of Chinwse communities in Thailand who generally not going to associate if they speak different dialects.
After 1987, Chinese newspaper in Thailand went in decline ... and they ONLY survive by becoming an advertising for Chinese communities ... at some point you cand see the same face in 16 different news ... the same face who is the real patronage ...
Xing Zhong Yian Pao has the readership in decline form 18000 copies to 4000 copies - even though some newspaper boast that they have 35000-50000 readers, it is due to the advertising while the actual percentage would be less 5% of existing newspaper.
The older generation have gone to the graveyards and the new generations are just reading Thai Newspaper
Even though it is possible to cooperate with the mainland China by allowing the publication from China Daily to attact more readers who ONLY know the new writign style, but it would no longer act as the mouthpiece for the spirits of Chinese in Thailand ...
