After the article Top 10 Thai street Food has been locked, I have to come up with Foreign Food and Drinks that set up the market in Thailand.
Now, Yakult has been raised form 5 Baht to 7 Baht per bottle ... it is abotu time to go back into history.
Yakult has been marketed in Thailand since 1969 by the Khun Praphan Hetrakul (the children of Saeng Hetrakul - the founder of Dailynews) ... even today, Yakult factory is not very far away from Dailynews on Vibhavadee Highway.
Yakult is the first one that introduce the ready to drink Yokurt ... it has been done through direct sell by Sao Yakult .. (Yakult Ladies) which lay the foundation for Yakult in Thailand ...
Even though the competitors have introduce ready to drink Yokurt in various sizes, Yakult is still 80 cc since this small size has been a proven success since it never cause diarrhea at all ....
After the major price raising, it is about time to prove that Yakult still be able to withstand against the competitor
Instant Noodle in Thailand
Initially, the first brand of instant noodle is Sunwa by Thai Sunway Industrial Food in 24 June 1972 - by the purchase of license from Sunwa (Japan) .. Soon, Wan Thai Food Industry has offered Yam Yam and Thai Food Products offers Wai Wai to compete against Sunwa.
However, the real earthquake in Thai Instant Noodle industry is Mama by Sahaphat [Now Saha Group] of Heng Thiam [Thiam Chokewatthana - the Thai Consumer Product magnet] who has run the market research + data analysis in additon to the purchase of Knowhow from Taiwan suppliers ...
When Sahaphat is about to run the first ad on Mama Instant noodle, the news headline abotu the food poiusoning + diarhiah by instant noodle cuase quite a bad start but Heng Thiam and his men have solved the marketing problem by
1. Dropping Mama Semi-Instant Noodle and replacing with Mama Chicken Soup noodle
2. Pushing nthe advertising and market so hard that eventuall Mama has just become a generic name for Thai instant noodle.
3. Advertising by Females instead of males ... This has atracted so many customers - starting from housewives, maids algo nwith other males ... by "Mama is Delicious!"
These triple strategies work so well that Mama is the undispute No. 1 Thai instant noodle since 1975-76 while it has forced Yam Yam & Wai Wai to find the beter strategies to fight against the big gun like Sahaphat
1. Yamyam has to become a subsidiary of Ajinomoto (Thailand)
2. Thai Food Products has to export Wai Wai
DUring 1975-1976, the noodle stalls had to raise the price of noodle from 3-5 Baht per bowl into 8-10 Baht per bowl due to inflation by the First Oil Crisis in 1973-74 ... while instant noodle is still 4 Baht ... This has effectively increating the market values of the instant noodle from 61 million Baht in 19874 to 74 million Baht in 1975 and 122 million Baht in 1976!!! Instant noodle market values has reached 600 Million Baht in 1987 and it has become 8 BILLION Baht business in 2004!
However, Instant noodle business have been dominated by the Big 3 (Ma ma, Wai Wai, Yam Yam) for several decades ... so the competitors have come out but it seems to us that there is NO No.4 who is going to challenge the domination of the Big 3.
United Mill has come up with Maggi instant noodle in 1980 ... Initially, Maggi competed quite well by offering as the premium alternative to the Big 3 instant noodle giants but it failed to compete agaisnt the Big 3 since the taste is not appealing to Thai consumers.
Eventually, the competitors starting to diversify the products (miche marketing) by offering instant Kuay Jab, Instant grass noodle (Instant vermincilli) like Kungking or so as the way not to fight against the Big 3. However, the big 3 esp Mama of Sahaphat soon to offer instant Kuay Jab, Instant grass noodle (Instant vermincilli).. Therefore, it is a tough task for ANY new competitors who are going to fight against the giant like Sahaphat.
We'll see how Wai Wai and Yam Yam could fight against the Big Gun like mama of Saha group in shoulder to shoulder level.
