The Bangkok Post reported yesterday (Monday 2 April) that the Deputy Min of Transport was reviewing the decision for the Pink line to be a mono-rail line. I guess on the rare occasion the dysfunctional nature of mass transit policy decision making may give one hope....

This was held in Miniburi right? I wonder if the panel had many questions from the public about what exactly is a monorail and the rationale for why monorail was chosen for this line?

Because the vast majority of passengers who take mass transportation along Chaeng Watthana - Ram Indra road (AKA Highway 304) generally make a short haul trip - did not go all the way from Pakkret to Minburi so it is not justified for Heavy rail.

Furthermore, they just convincing the people that they can get Monorail before getting the heavy rail

MOT and MRTA stated earlier in the week that bidding for the Pink line should be ready early next year. A comparative study found that heavy rail would cost 60 billion baht and monorail 50 billion baht. Still undecided on the extra 6 stations.

This was then reported as a disjointed news brief in the Post as follows:

Extra rail line to Bangkapi mooted, BKK Post, 29/06/12

THE MRTA will stage an international bidding contest early next year to select a contractor to build another electric railway from the Thailand cultural Center to Bangkapi district in Bangkok.

The link will form the middle part of three sections of the 160 billion baht Ornage Line that will stretch 37.5km from Taling Chan to Minburi. MRTA Deputy Governor Peerayuth Singpatanakul said.

Another electric railway project that will follow soon is the 36km Pink Line from Khae Rai to Minburi. The 50 billion baht Pink LIne will be a light rail project which will serve as a feeder railway for other links.

One of the main original reasons given for going ahead with a silly mono-rail for this route was said to be that it would be cheaper than heavy rail but of course we now see that that rationale has little substance. In the end I suspect it will end up costing more than heavy rail after 5-10 years of operations as I am assuming lots of technical problems, maintenance issues, regular breakdowns and loss of revenue.

Clearly they just want to demonstrate that PT men is going to do something for Bangkokians in the suburbs from Nonthaburi to Minburi with the obvious results as quick as possible (with a hope to be done in 2018) ... even though it means that they will opt to Monorail instead of heavy rail like BTS Skytrain.

Ok this is just a brief report but I love the last sentences which gives the distinct impression that the same rolling stock will used on both the Pink Line and the Yellow Line. Of course that is impossible, it is just badly worded but to most readers this would be the impression.

    MRT PINK LINE
Price of Pink Line rises to Bt54 billion, The Nation September 26, 2012

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand has raised the investment estimate for the Pink Line (Khae Rai to Min Buri) from Bt38 billion to Bt54 billion because of an increase in the number of planned stations from 24 to 30 and higher land prices, MRTA governor Yongsit Rojanasrikul said. He said the MRTA board would propose the project for Cabinet approval next month.

Once approved, the authority will start construction next year and target completion for 2017. The fare will be a flat Bt20 for the whole Pink Line, he said. The route from Khae Rai in Nonthaburi province to Min Buri district in Bangkok is 34.5 kilometres long.

Yongsit said the MRTA was considering buying about 300 train carriages for Bt60 million each or Bt18 billion in total. These would be used for the Pink Line and the Yellow Line, which will run from Lat Phrao to Samrong.

This implied that Yellow line will have to be Monorail though as the way to get a quick voters by showing that they have done their job early but they also alienate voters at the same time because those who live along Lad Phrao Road since they BADLY want Heavy Rail subway

If PT wants to modify the route and extend it further east to Nong Chok and beyond - I guess so that the party faithful can watch futsal matches at the new, as yet unfinished stadium - then it again makes more sense for it to be a heavy rail line.

Pheu Thai seeks revision of MRT Pink Line, Bkk Post, 4/10/2012
The ruling Pheu Thai Party is calling for a revision of the plans for Bangkok's MRT Pink Line, claiming that most passengers will not benefit from the existing proposed route. Bangkok Pheu Thai MPs Vicharn Meenchainant, Jirayu Huangsap and Polapoom Wipatpoom-iprathet have called for the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) and the Transport Ministry to reconsider an existing plan to construct a train line from Chaeng Watthana Road to Min Buri.

Mr Vicharn said that instead of following the current plan to build the Pink Line through Min Buri Market, a sparsely populated area, the line should instead go along Suwinthawong Road in order to accommodate people who live in Nong Chok and Khlong Sam Wa districts, as well as areas bordering Chachoengsao province. The Pheu Thai MPs will submit a public survey report on the matter to the prime minister, the OTP and the Transport Ministry for consideration.

Mr Jirayu claimed that there has been some political interference on the issue in order to drive up property prices along the proposed route. He added that the existing plan is based on an outdated study, conducted seven years ago.
