    Upgrading Rangist into Rangsit City

Rangsit has been upgraded from Town municipal to City Municipal - thus becomign Rangsit City on 29 April 2011 -> after BMA, Nonthaburi City, Samut Prakarn City, and Pakkret City for the Greater BKK since Rangsit Town Municipal have met the criteria accordign to Municipal Act of BE 2496 (1953) algon with the amendaments of the acts.

However, the Town Municipal council has to be dissolved and the election will be held in within the next 60 days after 29 April 2011.

Normally, upgrades in municipal status are done at the end of the council terms, so there probably would have been a municipal council (and mayor) election in the next 60 days anyway. Sadly, the website of the Legal Affair Bureau where I could find information on planned municipal changes has been last updated in September last year - maybe someone speaking Thai has to call there to nudge the webmaster, by email I wasn't successful. In the transcripts found there it always states the date of end of term, and usually the upgrade is stated to be effective around that date.

However, before a municipal election can be done, the constituencies have to be redrawn, as with the upgrade from town to city municipality the number of councillors increases from 24 to 36, and the number of constituencies from 2 to 3. At least in the recent case of Mae Sot, this step took so long that the election had to be delayed. And if am not mistaken, some of the many TAO upgraded to subdistrict municipalities in the last years did not have the election for more than a year.
