Thai life expectancy lags Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka

New data from World Health Organization shows Thai male life expectancy in 2007 was LOWER than the lower income nations of Iran, Vietnam, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka...possibly others as many others I didn't bother checking. Females showed a similar lower trend being lower than Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and China, on par with Philippines.

    See tables...

    ^^^

Accidents [by drunk driving, mobile phone talking or just their own callousness to hit trains and trucks], Cancer, heart Diseases, Suicide due to heavy psychological pressure from their parents and peers or even their own families, Aids kill many Thai people at workable ages ...

BTW, at least 8 children have killed themselves to protest against theri parents who attempt to forbid them from playing PC Games since 1998. We have not included the figure of children who killed themselves to

    1) protest against theri parents when they are askign theri children to move from schools in the rural area to school in the city ...
    2) to redeem themselves after the failture to get into good highschools or universities theri parents and theri peers keep pressuring them to do so.

    Wink

Hmm...I think many of the things Wisarut has mentioned (like suicide, driving, peer pressure) are not Thai specific...very common all throughout Asia, with the exception of AIDS. Gaming is not a major cause of death for sure, unless you consider obesity...but then TV and even office work could be included.

I would dare to bet that Thailand has far stronger healthcare systems than Vietnam, Indonesia, or Philippines, and atleast on par with China, though this nation probably has much more risk-taking behavior. I wonder what the life expectancies would be if HIV/AIDS patients were excluded, I think this would give a more accurate picture of how "healthy" it is to be here in Thailand. Note that Thai life expectancy dropped from 1990 to 2000, showing a marked decrease due to AIDS. However, many advances in length and quality of life for AIDS sufferers have come since 2000, but probably not enough to skew the statistics in favor of Thailand. Vietnam is beginning to go through a full blown HIV epidemic, it would be interesting to see if Vietnam's life expectancy decreases over the years to the Thai level or not.

Have you every included the figure of death by Homicide due to various crimes [including the debt collectings process by loan sharks or so] yet? What about death from pollusion-related sickness (esp those in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, Lamphun Industrial estate) yet? Even Chingmai get choked by the pollusion from within the municiple and from far away including the acidic smoke/smog from Mae Mo Power Plant which has already ruined many villages nearby due to the brown coal burning. This is the main cause why those who live along Southern coast say FLATLY HELL NO to the new industrial estates in the South.

Even though our helthcare system coiuld rival Singapore, but the cases of DEATH by medical abuses, deliberate neglects, malpractices and misdiagnoses with impunity are rising ... In some case children who got Dengue and pregnant mothers have not been in properly treatment despite of the potential of the doctors and nurses to do so ... which cause them to DIE prematurely which you can see on the headline news or the morning news .... and the lawsuits agaisnt doctors are piling up in both criminal courts and civil courts .... If you are in BKK, you should have gotten such kind of news already ...

Sure, AIDS is quite an epidemic esp on the North - and slightly lesser extend to those in Eastern Seaboard and BKK. Look at thsoe in therminal stage at Bumrat Naradoon General Hospital (AKA Hospital for AIDS patients) in Nonthaburi (BKK Northwestern suburb) as well as those in Wat Phrabat Namphu in Lopburi as the example of this ..

Smile voicing complains may be good for your health

Dealing with statistical analysis and quoting them to justify a belief or political standing is harmless and fun. I would add my 2 satang's worth.
Perhaps someone should try to quantify and include "kee Bon" or penchant to complaint as a Thai character to add into the mix.

How can we say that we have better healthcare facility when there are widespread case of medical malpractice to squeeze cash from the paitient's families as much as possible?

How about the medical malpractice and medical neglect that killed or mailed the patients whjich compensation will be paid ONLY after the supreme court decision?

Now, there is a high and frequent incident of infant mortality at Phyathai 2 due to the Medical neglects or medical malpractices and those doctors and nurses keep covering up with the case of infant mortality from the ER ....
