    Arches are crooked!

From streetview (approaching on Sathorn Road) but also seen from the 23rd floor of Empire Tower the arches of the intersection crossing look crooked. For some time I assumed that Unique would smoothen the curvature by tensioning the verical cables but now we are approaching completion it doesn't look like it will be corrected.
Perhaps the resident bridge nut Jerryfin can comment on this? I'm not that technical.

I spoke to a supervisor some weeks back about the distortion and it is intentional...or so they claim. I believe it was intentional to help distract the eye from the misalignment of the BTS-side walkway and the MRT station entrance. The arched steel pipe is too rigid to be bent differently by the cables. I had assumed the cables were there just for decoration, but I am not sure now if they contribute to the support of the walkway covers over the bridge or not. Certainly they are not there to support the bridge. The bridge did very well on it's own with all the heavy construction equipment before the arches appeared on the scene.
The bridge steps, cladding and flooring are almost complete now. But I am still wondering if they are going to have new escalators for access from the south side of Sathorn. The pilings are complete now on either side.

The escalators on many of the BRT stations are not working for long periods(Several weeks at Wat Dan and Thanon Rat). Does anyone know if it has something to do with the suppliers not getting paid and therefore refusing to honor warranty and maintenance? The supplier seemed to me to be the most efficient participant in the whole project. Their equipment was up and running long before anything else and initially they were very good about fixing teething problems.

That's a good picture, taken this weekend I am guessing as they have only just cleared away most of the equipment. I had a closer look today and the steel bars running down from the arches to the top of the walkway cover support posts are just decorative. The cover is self supporting. I think it looks good.

And here's the previously posted rendered image again, for comparison with reality:

Strange, looks like the arch is also leaning here, only in the opposite direction (west)!
Also, will they paint the arch yellow?

Finally, it just occurred to me what that silvery structure protruding on the right side (which The Enforcer asked about in post #473) is: the planned elevated walkway ("skywalk") connecting Sathon and Lumphini (or even "Ratchaprasong and Taksin"?). It seems to be built right over the khlong in the center of the road, and presumably follow it for hundreds of meters more, not connect to the building in the foreground.

Is this serious? I mean a Sky "walk" between Lumpini and Sathorn - more like an olympic marathon! Who is seriously going to walk 2km between stations?

That skywalk it to allow those who work between Chong Nonsee station or Lumphini subway station to access into either station.

The main, new BRT bridge across Sathorn is now open for pedestrians. The old bridges that run parallel have already been closed. I think that the proposed pedestrian bridge along Sathorn is a long way off...but I would use it gladly. The distance from BRT to Silom MRT is about the same as that along Sathorn to Lumpini MRT (1.6kms). I walk most days from BRT to MRT for many reasons...I don't have strict time schedule, the exercise is beneficial, I like to see what's going on at ground level and I am still a bit pissed with BTS for not giving a discount for the stored value card (as MRT do)and the needless congestion at Siam station and train overcrowding while new, unused trains sit in the yard at Mochit.

Now, some sets of CNR Changchun rolling stocks have been used on Silom Line - wait until all have been fully tested.

    Hawkers not yet, Bollywood already

This Sunday afternoon your diligent workaholic reports from the 23rd Floor of Empire Tower that a South Asian "Bollywood" crew shot some scenes on the new overpass. Indeed, more space for groups to dance!

BTSC is goign to run BRT instead of BMA

Fiurst year anniversary - lots of problems to be solved
    http://www.manager.co.th/Daily/ViewN...=9540000067098

    BRT promotions plan, The Nation,May 31, 2011
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will launch a discount promotion for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fares after the number of users dropped to 15,000 a day, which was lower than the targeted 20,000 per day, BMA deputy governor Theerachon Manomaipibul said.

The one-year anniversary for BRT operations was on May 15, but the number of users was much lowered than targeted because the SRT route from Rajapreuk to Sathorn did not have many offices and people, Theerachon said. So he discussed possible solutions with Krungthep Thanakom Co Ltd, including the possibility of linking the BRT system with the Bangkok Transit System (BTS) - the skytrain - as a long-term solution.

"Initially, the BMA will do public relations work to stimulate people to use the BRT more and get Krungthep Thanakom to talk with BTS about special promotions, such as discounts on fare or monthly passes, in order to link the two systems," he said.
