Low tide at Loh Ba Kao Bay--quite a few beaches in
this national park are labeled as 'private property.'

websites, now visit Phi Phi Island the 2Bangkok.com way... |
| Alleged 100-million-baht hotel expansion on the
south side of Loh Ba Kao Bay (home of the stunning Phi
Phi Island Village Resort). There are already new bungalows
that have been built under the trees all over the hill. Hotel
authorities had no comment when asked about this. |

Phi Phi Coral Resort at Laem Thong has been gutted
for renovation. Like most hotels in Thailand, it has will have
"& Spa" as part of its name when it reopens late
in 2004. |
| Holiday
Inn, probably the most expensive resort on the island, is
developing 400 meters of beach south of the present hotel. To
keep people from seeing this, they have blocked off a public
trail along the shore. This was the only shot we could get of
the many luxury bungalows before guards chased us off the construction
site. |

Loh Lana Bay during an afternoon rainstorm--The beachfront
is deserted except for a half-finished and apparently derelict 'beach
club' development.
The eastern part of the peninsula
between Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalam Bay is a slum. We would assume
this area would be the location of long-planned trash-incinerator
to solve the waste disposal problem on the island.
There are some signs of attempts to spruce up in the area. These
include a new paved path with a sign in Thai proudly stating
the path cost 600,000 baht to build. |

At the north end of the slum, trash
is burned--apparently around the clock. |

| There is a proud display of the marijuana leaf
around the island these days. The east side of the Ton Sai area
has a large party scene with plenty of marijuana-smoking accessories
openly sold. Quarter, half, and full moon parties are advertised
everywhere and bars are open until 3am. |
| Some areas of the peninsula between Ton Sai Bay
and Loh Dalam Bay have almost wall to wall development with
many new guesthouses being built. |

| Despite all of the above, there is no denying
that Phi Phi Island is still one of the most striking natural
places on earth... |
