Earlier: New world's tallest
building tops out - CNN, July 7, 2002
News from our neighbors: CNN International had a short blurb about
the world's new tallest building, Taipei's 101 Tower. It will
be 50 meters higher than Petronas
Towers, take 35 seconds for the elevator to reach the top,
and was built at a cost of USD $1.6 billion. The skyscraper's
website is here.
(Both the building's interior and exterior incorporate the
Chinese pagoda form and the shape of bamboo flowers. The lucky
number eight, which means blooming or success, is represented
by the eight clearly delineated exterior sections of the building.)

Nils reports: You will like this: Quickbird.
The pop-up window shows a satellite view of the Taipei 101 building
by QuickBird, the world's highest resolution commercial imaging
satellite (61 cm). More about QuickBird at Digital
Globe. Check out their nice
gallery. For a start, I'd recommend the Hamburg, Mecca, Ottawa,
Montreal images... Or maybe you like the Statue of Liberty. And
they also have the palm islands (yes, they can
be seen from space).

Like other prominent
Taiwanese skyscrapers, this one has a uniquely Chinese motif.

Taiwan is making the most of its new landmark through
shopping and promotional activities.

New Year's celebrations were held in the area.
