Homer 2000
Here is a syndicated editorial cartoon cut from from the Philadelphia Inquirer, October, 1999. A man looking at an extra-portly Homer comments, "He's got name recognition, he speaks his mind, he's from outside the Beltway and I hear he's coming over to the Reform Party!" I can't quite read the artist's signature, but under it is "Springfield News-Sun Copley News Service"!

He Will Eat Your Competition for Breakfast

Here is a trade ad from the back cover of a 1993 Variety. It is urging stations to buy the syndicated version of the Simpsons. Homer is sitting on a recliner, smoking a big stogie. Above his head are the words, "He Will Eat Your Competition for Breakfast" and in a cartoon balloon, Homer replies, "No Problemo." In the lower right-hand corner is a Simpsons "logo" with the words, "The Simpsons--It's more than a family. It's a franchise."
I thought it unusual for a company to portray their main character smoking (especially when the character does not do so in the show) and there does not seem to be any real reason for him to be smoking in the ad anyway. In any event, it is typical of the irreverent, eye-catching trade ads that appear in Variety, which, after all, are aimed at industry execs and not the viewing public. You can get a pretty good idea of it from the thumbnail, but if you want a better copy, click on the image for a bigger version (88.5KB).
