Mukdahan bridge to Laos
- February 13, 2006
Jerry reports: These extra wide spans, according to the artist's
impression, will be supported by two towers, 7 spans apart, with either
reinforced concrete or cables. One of the towers on the Lao side is
already substantially built, while the tower on the Thai side is barely
above the road level. The collapsed section was at the Thai side adjacent
to the tower. Probably the extra cantilever forces on the extra-wide
spans are slowing the erection. There are 14 spans that cover all
water. The approach road on the Thai side is complete.
...In case anyone is interested, I have attached a Google
Earth file that will take you directly to a map of the area and
a marker showing the exact location of the bridge... assuming you
have Google Earth on the computer the file is opened on. The location
of the west end of the bridge on the river bank is (according to my
GPS):
16 degrees, 36 minutes and 4.32 seconds North
104 degrees, 44 minutes and 8.52 seconds East
The attached file is very small, but it does work if you have Google
Earth installed. Just click on the file to open and it will automatically
start Google Earth and take you to the bridge Land Mark and show it
relative to Mukdahan city...

Jerry writes: The bridge is largely complete and used by construction traffic... Just fitting some railings and lights now. The immigration/customs house is finished.
