A new round of draconian price increases has left Rangoon
people stunned but resigned, and reluctant even to talk openly
about a new bomb attack in the city center...
Gasoline is not just eight times more expensive this week than
last, it's also severely rationed. My taxi driver showed me his
ration book, allowing him six gallons (27 liters) every three
days. No exemption is made for taxi operators, who run Rangoon's
only reasonably comfortable form of public transport...
