NYT examines the Philippines' lack of
population control: ...The Philippines is
often compared with Thailand, which has a particularly
active family planning program. In the 1970's,
both countries had populations of about 50 million
and economies of similar sizes. Three decades
later there are about 10 million more people
in Thailand and about 30 million more in the
Philippines. Experts say the main cause of runaway
population growth is the failure of the Philippine
government to educate the public, to promote
family planning and to make low-cost contraceptives
widely available...
